For WinSyslog editions other than the free edition, a license is required. Many
people have asked what exactly is licensed and - importantly - if they need a
license for each devices (e.g. router) that is sending syslog messages to
WinSyslog.
WinSyslog is basically licensed on a per-machine basis. This means the
machine the product is installed on. However, each edition also includes
a maximum number of clients that it is licensed to be used with. The reason is
that we would like big installations to do a fair contribution to the WinSyslog
development and support costs. Consqeuently, the basic packages contain a
generous client license count. Client licenses come together with your main
WinSyslog license. So multiple WinSyslog licenses are only needed if multiple
instances of the product are installed. This most probably is the case in larger
organizations which have a syslog forwarding hierarchy.
For the number of client licenses included, please see our
WinSyslog Edition
Comparison sheet.
