.. index:: RFC 5424 RFC 5424 ======== RFC 5424 is a `IETF `_ document. This document describes the syslog protocol, which is used to convey event notification messages. This protocol utilizes a layered architecture, which allows the use of any number of transport protocols for transmission of `syslog `_ messages. It also provides a message format that allows vendor-specific extensions to be provided in a structured way. A standard already produced by this working group is :doc:`RFC 3195 <../glossaryofterms/rfc3195>`, which describes how syslog can be sent reliably over a :doc:`TCP <../glossaryofterms/tcp>` connection. Adiscon supports RFC 5424 messages. There are a number of switches in each product to take care of those implementation that do it slightly different. The formal specification for RFC 5424 can be found in the `IETF RFC `_ repository.
