We have just released WinSyslog 18.3, introducing major architectural updates including YAML configuration support, advanced runtime metrics, and significant hardening of core engine services.

One of the most notable additions in this release is the introduction of YAML configuration support. By adding file-based YAML support for service configuration files, WinSyslog offers administrators a modern, human-readable alternative for managing complex setups, aligning the product with industry-standard DevOps and “Configuration as Code” practices.

In this version, we have also prioritized operational visibility. WinSyslog 18.3 introduces Runtime Metrics via a dedicated HTTPS query endpoint. While disabled by default for security, this feature allows administrators to pull real-time operational data into monitoring dashboards, providing unprecedented insight into the health and performance of their logging infrastructure.

The Free Edition also receives attention in this update, with updated feature handling designed to streamline deployments for those using WinSyslog in home labs and small-scale environments.

Technical improvements in WinSyslog 18.3

This release includes extensive “under-the-hood” hardening to improve reliability in high-volume environments:

  • Hardened Communications: Improved TCP/TLS receive handling and RELP listener reliability, including better oversized-message rejection and embedded control-character escaping.
  • Database Performance: Added configurable commit batching for ODBC and OLE DB writers, significantly improving efficiency for high-velocity database logging.
  • Enhanced Durability: The File Action has been upgraded with improved log rotation durability, better retry persistence during outages, and safer recovery during reloads.
  • SNMP Hardening: Improved memory handling and string boundary checks for SNMP services and trap receivers.
  • Core Engine Stability: Refined configuration reload logic and command lifetime handling to ensure 24/7 uptime during administrative changes.
  • Timestamp Precision: Fixed RFC3339 timestamp cache reuse issues within syslog headers to ensure high-accuracy event sequencing.
