Why update now: This release combines a File Action feature drop — calendar-aware, time-based log rotation — with corrections that improve service reliability, database-action shutdown behaviour, SNMP sender attribution, and daily administration.
If you defer: Existing schedules continue to work, but cannot use the new rotation intervals. Installations using SNMP Trap Receiver, OLE DB Database Action, configuration reloads, or custom service names retain the operational limitations addressed by this release.
Who benefits most: Administrators who rotate logs by time, forward or correlate SNMP traps by sender, operate database actions, or use the User Interface dashboard.
Upgrade and verification: Update WinSyslog using the normal supported upgrade path. Confirm that the installed service version is 26.9.0.774. Test the changed functions that are relevant to your deployment.
Important changes
Time-based File Action rotation
- Change: File Action rotation supports seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, and calendar months.
- Operational impact: Administrators can align log-file rotation more closely with retention, reporting, and archival schedules.
- Applies to: WinSyslog deployments using File Action.
- Verification: Configure a suitable test interval and confirm the expected file-rotation behaviour.
Service operation and shutdown reliability
- Change: Stop requests are retained during configuration reload; services with custom Windows service names start reliably; an OLE DB Database Action shutdown crash is corrected.
- Operational impact: Reduces avoidable disruption during service administration and shutdown.
- Applies to: All WinSyslog installations for the first two corrections; deployments using OLE DB Database Action for the database-action correction.
- Verification: Reload configuration, stop and start the service during a controlled maintenance window, and test an OLE DB-enabled configuration where applicable.
SNMP Trap Receiver sender attribution
- Change: Incoming traps record the actual sender address.
- Operational impact: Source-dependent filtering, correlation, forwarding, and incident handling can use the correct sender identity.
- Applies to: WinSyslog installations using SNMP Trap Receiver.
- Verification: Send a trap from a known device and compare the recorded sender address with that device.
Configuration Client
- Rotation settings preserve the configured time unit and warn when a newly configured rotation interval is shorter than five minutes.
- The Configuration Client includes the new File Action rotation units.
User Interface
- The User Interface supports the new File Action rotation units.
- After local Metrics Helper setup, standard users can reload the metrics dashboard.
- Service-owned older General settings no longer produce unnecessary unknown-configuration indications.
Published errata and known issues
SNMP Trap Receiver sender attribution: ERR-2026-001: Incorrect source address for received SNMP traps documents the affected earlier WinSyslog service versions, operational impact, and test procedure. WinSyslog 26.09 corrects sender attribution; after updating, send a trap from a device with a known address and confirm that the recorded event source identifies that device.
